The Crossfit Open

The Open is the first qualifying round for athletes competing to go on to the CrossFit Games held each summer in Madison WI. So why should you compete? The Open is much more than a pathway to the Games, it is a worldwide celebration of fitness, a new opportunity to challenge yourself, a measure of your progress, and an awesome weekly excuse to come together with your Movement Republic community, work hard, and celebrate a job well done.

The Open is for athletes of all levels. There will be a scaled and Rx, and new Foundations version of each workout, each week. Everyone, regardless of your current fitness level, will find success, revel in new PRs and uncover unknown strength, physical and mental, during the Open. If you're new to the Open, think of this as your opportunity to set the bar so that you can leap over it next year. If you're an Open veteran and maybe you feel your fittest days are behind you, challenge your mental toughness and fight for the best performance at your current level. I bet there is more there than you think.

Most importantly, this is an opportunity to strengthen your commitment to your health and fitness... and of course, show off on the Gram.

How it Works

Like everything else right now, things will be a little different this time around.

  • Register at open.crossfit.com and pay $20 to join the worldwide competition! (there is no separate fee from MR this year as there will be no t-shirts this time - more on swag later.)

  • This year's competition will last three weeks instead of five (phew!) Though we don't know yet if there will be multiple workouts each week or just one like in years past.

    • Week 1: March 11th-14th

    • Week 2: March 18th-21st

    • Week 3: March 25th-29th.

  • Workouts are released on Thursday evening at 7pm and you have until the following Monday evening to complete the workout and submit your score to games.crossfit.com (and Wodify!) and see where you stack up among athletes of all levels from all around the world.

    • Open workouts will preferably be completed on Friday during your regular class time. Alternately they can be made up during Saturday’s make up day and on Monday during class times.

    • You will need a judge and the judge can not be the coach on duty. For the three weeks of the Open, all class registrations will be done via a google doc where you will choose a time slot to workout and a time slot to judge (or a few). We need everyone’s help to judge!

    • Saturday and Monday you will be responsible for bringing your own judge, there will only be sign ups for judging on Friday. Need help finding one? Ask in the Facebook group, chat with your MR Ambassador or ask a coach.

    • We will help everyone learn the judging standards and what you will need to do as a judge, don’t worry it’s not too difficult and it’s fun!

  • We have teams again this year! Your MR Ambassadors are your team leaders. We encourage you all to make the most of this, come up with a team name, matching outfits, maybe make t-shirts or hashtags to show your team pride.

    • There will be prizes at the end of the Open for a variety of individual and team based achievements.

    • Communicate with your team members! If you have questions, look there first.

    • ** Want to put logos on something? Ask coach Sarah about the MR logo, and grab an Open one HERE. One Hour Tees can get you shirts in a hurry.

  • Will You Have to Wear a Mask??

    • Ok, we hear you. Wearing a mask during regular workouts sucks, and during an Open workout it will suck even more. We want everyone to do well and be happy so we think we’ve come up with a solution…

    • Friday’s during Open workouts, Judges and coaches will wear a mask the entire time, athletes must wear a mask during their warm up and immediately after their workout BUT may take it off during the time you are actually doing the WOD.

    • Saturday - Monday it’s business as usual. Masks all day

    • We know this isn’t a perfect solution, but while there are many of you who want the masks off, there are also many at MR who want the masks on. We must walk the line between being fair to our athletes as competitors and careful with everyone’s health.

    • Unless it is very cold outside we will have the garage door open and fans running during the WOD.

      Party!

    • Save the Date: Friday evening March 26th after the last WOD of the 2021 Open, we celebrate!

    • See who's earned an award and our collective admiration and collect your super exclusive MR Open koozie, which you should promptly pop a delicious beverage into.

Still have questions? Just ask! But trust us, you should do it, it’s so much fun and absolutely worth the $20 registration fee.
